The Bogus to Boise Bonzai is a "downhill" race that takes you from the upper Boise foothills at Bogus Basin Ski Area to downtown Boise. The course covers 15 miles of dirt road and a 2 mile grind of a climb to the top of Eaglson Summit.

The weekend events also include a XC trail run, the Northwest Single-speed Championship Race, and the Kamikaze Downhill (a shorter more technical and high speed course from the top of the lift back to the lodge).

The race was an annual event about 10 years ago before a fire caused the event to be cancelled. It took that much time for the event to make a comeback and in 2006, it was back.

This is an ideal race for the beginner rider all the way to the top Pro racers. The course is perfect for first time racers to give a race a try and have a great time doing it. All racing categories are included and encouraged, and single-speeds and 6in travel bikes can compete for a special award of $50.00 to the fastest times for each.

Course Overview

Racers start on top of Deer Point where they will begin a LeMans running start to the 15 mile race with a finish at the Hulls Gulch Nature Center and parking area with a post race party at the Boise Co-op on 8th Street in Boise.

The course starts down Schafer Butte Road which is a potentially very dusty section. There is also the potential for a major pile-up if someone would happen to lay thier bike over in the first half mile of the race. Be aware that the course funnels everyone through an open gate in the road where there is potential for one of these pile-ups! After the gate, you are riding the Boise Ridge Road.

The course winds its way down Boise Ridge Road and everyone seems to be safely spread out by the end of mile two. Corners can be tight and the sandy makeup of the road can make some of the corners very loose.

You see here how loose the corners can be with the sandy makeup of the road!

Around mile 6 into the race, you reach the bottom of Eaglson Summit where you begin the (approx.) 2 mile grind to the top. This is where you win or lose the race! The grade isn't that excruciating, but what makes it tough is that there is no relief...a very steady un-ending grind until you make it to the top at approximately mile 8. The good news, its all downhill from here!

The second half of the race is similar to the first except that the terrain opens up a bit from the top of the 8th Street Extension...no more trees, fewer turns, and more speed! There are some very rutty sections that one needs to be ready for on this section of the course!

The lower end of 8th Street has much looser and more course gravel on the road which when combined with the washboards on the road can make even some of the gradual corners a bit hairy.

The race ends just before the pavement starts at the Hulls Gulch Nature Center and parking area...and just a short ride down 8th street will take you to the post-race party at the Boise Co-op!

The last stretch of the map isn't showing up...I'm working on it...check back soon! Until then, you can still easily see where the course runs...it simply follows 8th Street Extension (a.k.a. Sunset Peak Road according to Google Maps) to the red placemark which is the finish.

Getting There

From downtown Boise, drive up 13th, or 15th street to Hill Road. Take a left onto Hill Road and then a right at the first light onto Bogus Basin Road. Drive a few blocks and watch fro Ridley's Market on your left...this is the meeting and pickup point for the shuttle.

The pickup point is the Ridley's Market parking lot northernmost corner, near the Bogus Basin corporate offices. One bus can carry up to 40 people and is great way to prep for the race with your friends and get the party started early. Your bike will go into a separate cargo vehicle, feel free to leave things you cannot take with you during the race on the shuttle, it will brought back to the Boise Co-op.

The bus will leave the parking lot at Ridley's at 10am. Again, pre-register online, otherwise you will be charged $20.00 for the on-site admission onto the shuttle.

There will NOT be bus service back to the top after the race.
