we also use to say that when you can move the chain in the front direction on the middle chainring for more than a half centimetre of gap, the chain is done... I don't know if this rule is universal but it's approximately what my old biopace tolerates before suffering irreversible "chain erosion" :)

I think I heard that too Eric. I just check and when its on #3 I fling the chain. Seems to prolong everything.
