Overview

Gold Bar Rim is a fantastic trail that leads visitors up 1200ft to a beautiful cliff overlooking Arches National Park. Just outside of Moab, this trail became an instant classic for many outdoor enthusiasts. GBR is situated in a surreal area with views that capture the true nature of the area. The cliff itself falls back to the west allowing its drainage to be collected in the Colorado River. Because of this, visitors are overwhelmed with a 360 degree vantage point including the La Sal Mountains, the Colorado River, Arches National Park, and the town of Moab.

Trail Description

Gold Bar Rim is a very technical trail. Bikers beware that during this adventure you may encounter steep drop-offs, narrow ledges, hard climbing, and steep downhill all in a secluded area. Take this trail seriously.

This description is for the standard Gold Bar Rim out and back. Many variations exist and will be included in this text with your help. Because I lack information about additional trail connections, additions would be greatly appreciated. Please add them to the addition/corrections area.

The trail starts at Gemini Bridges parking area. Follow Gemini Bridges Road south. The road will cut back to the west and quickly become steeper. You will be climbing a couple hundred feet in just 2 or 3 miles. After the initial climb and a long descent, the road will split. Staying left will keep you on the standard Gold Bar Rim trail. From here, expect some loose sand and moderate rock sections for the next 3 miles. An occasional step will offer challenges.

The final push to the Rim will become highly technical with large steps and steep slickrock. The trip out has slightly less climbing and will give you a chance to redeem yourself in all those technical areas. I personally remember the taste of the dirt. The last 3 miles to the parking area are downhill on a good dirt road.

Getting There

From Moab take Hwy 191 north for 5 miles. Turn left into a parking area at Gemini Bridges Rd.

Variations

A suggestion from ffelix:

This ride makes an EXCELLENT shuttle drop, too.

Get Coyote to drop you at the Gemini Bridges trailhead, then bomb down to the Gold Bar road intersection. Ride to the rim, then stay there--don't go home yet! Turn right & ride along the rim to the Portal Trail, descend to the Potash Road & pedal the pavement back to town on the new bike trail & bridge along HWY 191 [about 8-miles, I think, almost 30-miles in all].

It's a pretty big day through absolutely amazing terrain that you wouldn't think it possible to cover on a bike. If you aren't tired--or lost yet :)-- you can muck around endlessly on the rim & jeep trails before dropping to town...or head out Poison Spider just to say you did.

Basically everyone walks something on this ride, if only because discretion is the better part of valor or to save SAR the trouble of climbing up the permanent bolt ladder they put in to collect the bodies. It gets pretty gnarly on the rim & on the Portal Trail.

When to Bike

Gold Bar is usually visited in the cooler months of the year- that being late fall, winter, and early spring. The summer can get dangerously hot. I provided a small tabel of information I collected from weather.com as an example of Moab's weather trends.
