Ślęża night ride
A friend, Wojciech (rider from Wroclaw who occasionally attends marathons), posted the other day an event on facebook, called "Ślęża night ride", inspired by blogs of some US cyclers riding singletracks by night to avoid crowds and for the fun of doing it.
Despite the ascent to Ślęża is kind of short and raw, with little in common with these US singletracks in the proper sense of the word, several folks took themselves into the game, and we were about a dozen the evening of the event, at the car park of the pass Przełęcz Tąpadła.
My Ukrainian friend Oleksander, with who I had once ridden on Ślęża, joined too, with his new bike, a curious machine made of an iron frame, a cross country handlebar, and 29' wheels he mounted with MTB tires for the occasion.
As for me I realized the same day it had been a mistake to leave the Tomac too long on the balcony with low temperatures, tires were soft and the sealing product was to replace, I didn't feel bothering doing that just for one ride at the end of the season so I took the QBikes with slick trekking tires !
Many people didn't know each other but the group quickly got acquainted and soon a pleiade of blinking lights and headlamps was rushing onto the trail. To be honest, I had never managed to get on top of Ślęża before without stepping down. Many years ago, an attempt via this route was made by Romain and me, but the trail had been strewn with new stones that made the handling impossible in the steepest section which led us to turn back. I had been once with Marcin via the north trail, but it involves a bit of hiking. Surprisingly, that night turned to be the right one ! The autumn rotten red leaves ideally sealed the stones, and the ground was perfectly dry.
As we reached the top, temperature was surprisingly warm, but a strong wind was blowing. The mountain hut, unfortunately closed, and the huge antenna, were shining in the dark. The north horizon was strewn with lights of Wroclaw and surrounding cities.
When everyone got there, we didn't wait much after few photos for the ride down. Despite headlamps, irregularities of the trail were hardly visible due to dead leaves and we had to watch out and go slowly.
As we came back to the car park, we ended the event by some fried sausages at the picnic area and some drinks. We were back in Wroclaw at midnight. Despite of feeling the "downhill flow", that was indeed a great socializing event and needs to be repeated ! Wojciech is already talking about Wielka Sowa and Śnieżka for the next edition
A great idea !
