PreambleThis page is a supplement to: "The 8 trail of Avigliana lakes" and is dedicated to all those who want to finish the day cycling with a wonderful dip in the most beautiful natural pool in the lower Susa Valley.
The choreography is perfect as a beautiful waterfall nicknamed the "PIS", descends from the mountain fueling a tub of pure water, a welcome reprieve during the hot days of August.
Eight kilometers away from the lakes of avigliana and half hour bike you too can enjoy this unique spectacle of nature.
The PIS waterfall
OverviewThe right-hand bank of the Susa Valley is characterized by the presence of impressive peaks (Rocciamelone) and turbulent streams that, before flowing into the river Dora Riparia, have deeply sculpted mountains, producing gorges and canyons such as those of Foresto and Almese.
The stream Messa, which descends from the mountain ridge separating the Mount Curt and Mount Musinè has carved a beautiful canyon, whose head is the cascade of Pis.
The path can be defined: "The Walk of Giants", given the presence of giant boulders color white; on the shores are rocks of an intense blue color and plant roots, firmly and stubbornly clinging to the rocks, are real wood scuptures.
But the most magnificen show is the waterfall, which falls into a natural swimming pool (at the center of which is a small island) surrounded by sheer cliffs.
The best time to visit is in winter (too many people in the summer), at three in the afternoon with the sun in the south, reflexes on the water are spectacular.
Once you are arrived in Almese, you have to take the statal road direction Rubiana-Colle del Lys. The third curve to the right you have to take way Combal at the bottom of which there is a big field (about 30 minutes from Avigliana).

The TrailFrom the field to the bottom of via Combal, recognizable by the presence of a huge disused aqueduct pipe, take the dirt road that goes down into the canyon.
The route runs through a beautiful forest where it is not unusual to see or hear the woodpecker, the whole area is also frequented by herons. If you bring your dog, be aware that poachers have a nasty habit of placing the traps!
After passing two slopes characterized by the presence of sandy layers, ancient seabed, you came on the banks of the river Messa.
At that point there is a first natural swimming pool with giant boulders and the banks made of blue stone. If you continue north there is an easy path, but I advise you to stay on the bottom of the canyon and the walk facing of the giants.
Jumping from one rock to another, enjoy the incomparable beauty of the canyon. You can see the plants from the wonderful roots, which have withstood the floods of the river, and after fifteen minutes, you will find yourself face to face with the spectacular waterfall of Pis.
It is a real piece of paradise, a natural pool that in the summer is taken by assault overheated hikers.
In winter there is none and the photographs that you could do, will be wonderful.
