The Imposing Mountain.
The Gorge of Foresto (ORRIDO)covers an area of 180 hectares and has an altitude between 450 and 950 meters.

Its sheer and limestone cliffs , have been carved over the millennia by water coming from Mount Rocciamelone.
The area was inhabited by man since prehistoric times as evidenced by the findings that occurred in rock shelters upstream the horrid. Dates back to Roman times the fragment of a marble frieze which may have belonged to a temple and some inscriptions found during the excavations of the ancient church of Foresto.

In more recent times the area was known for its marble quarries, used for the construction of many buildings in Turin, and his wines. Inside the horrid can still see the buildings of a lazaret, until the eighteenth century used to isolate people with contagious diseases such as cholera.
In 1980 was established the special nature reserve dell'Orrido di Foresto and Juniperus Oxycedrus Station of San Giuliano Crotte.

The reserve was created to protect a population, which is extremely rare for Piedmont, cuddly juniper (Juniperus oxycedrus subsp. Macrocarpa). The species is now widespread on the Mediterranean coast, has reached the area of Foresto between 5,000 and 7,000 years ago as a result of climatic fluctuations, which extended the Mediterranean environment in large tracts of the Alps.

Foresto is a village of Bussoleno (near Turin), located about 45 km from the center of the capital of Piedmont.

Getting There

From Turin:

Take the A32 motorway, exit Chianocco (Bussoleno), twenty minutes by car. From Bussoleno take the SS.25 (statal road) direction Susa.

After two chilometers you find on the right, a not well visible signal for Foresto Village, turn on your right and follow the road since to the Main Church.

Then go inside the village on the left side of Rocciamelone creek. After ten minutes you reach the beginning of the Orrido di Foresto, well indicated by many signals.

The Trail

The deep cleft in the mountains the horrid is already clearly visible, the whole area is dominated by the imposing bulk of Mount Rocciamelone (North).

After about ten minutes (passing in front of the tavern Auntie Rosa), begins the paved road that goes into horrid.

The Old Mill.
The Old Mill

Just after a curve to the right, the old mill Foresto (private house), the owner into the house to cross a small bridge over the river. The house seems at the mercy of the elements and the mountain, but it is there since time immemorial!

The Lazareth
The Lazareth

Beyond a curve to the left, the road is literally carved into the mountain, you reach the signpost of Via Ferrata. Just beyond, on your left, there are some curious buildings that looks like a Pueblos.
Inside the Lazareth.
This is the eighteenth Lazzareto of Foresto, where they were isolated and quarantined patients with cholera (poor fellows!).

In front of us the first lock of the stream Rocciamelone (with a small waterfall), we must cross it taking us on the right bank.

The entrance of the Gorge.
Via Ferrata

You can choose two paths, keeping approached the mountain, follow the little path cut on the banks of river stone, or (recommended), the walk of giants, go up the river bed, jumping from one boulder to another.

It is a succession of natural pools formed by the falling boulders, beautiful piles of branches and trunks brought down by the raging waters, all surrounded by steep walls on which the horrid cling tenacious trees (which appear suspended in nothingness ).

After about twenty minutes of ascent to reach the waterfall.
A powerful pipe water flowing over rocks of all colors.
The vaporization of water is so fine you do not even notice it.
