Its sheer and limestone cliffs , have been carved over the millennia by water coming from Mount Rocciamelone.
The area was inhabited by man since prehistoric times as evidenced by the findings that occurred in rock shelters upstream the horrid. Dates back to Roman times the fragment of a marble frieze which may have belonged to a temple and some inscriptions found during the excavations of the ancient church of Foresto.
In more recent times the area was known for its marble quarries, used for the construction of many buildings in Turin, and his wines. Inside the horrid can still see the buildings of a lazaret, until the eighteenth century used to isolate people with contagious diseases such as cholera.
In 1980 was established the special nature reserve dell'Orrido di Foresto and Juniperus Oxycedrus Station of San Giuliano Crotte.
The reserve was created to protect a population, which is extremely rare for Piedmont, cuddly juniper (Juniperus oxycedrus subsp. Macrocarpa). The species is now widespread on the Mediterranean coast, has reached the area of Foresto between 5,000 and 7,000 years ago as a result of climatic fluctuations, which extended the Mediterranean environment in large tracts of the Alps.
Foresto is a village of Bussoleno (near Turin), located about 45 km from the center of the capital of Piedmont.
