OverviewMount Bramafam dominates by its 1400 meters high, the Alpine town of Bardonecchia.
It is a wonderful vantage point overlooking the three hills of the border with France: La Scala - Rhò - Frejus.
On its summit there is an ancient border fortress of the Kingdom of Italy, fully restored and now a beautiful museum.
The summit of Mount Bramafam can be reached with the Mountain bike by the military service road to the fortress.
The path is smooth and of short length.
It is a perfect heating ring for mountain bikers.
Getting ThereFrom Turin:
Take the A32 motorway, exit Bardonecchia. Take the direction of "Oulx".
Cross the railway overpass to your right, then pass the old military bridge over the river Dora.
It is a masterpiece of military engineering and allows for the plateau of Bramafam with one half hour biking. It it passable with off-road vehicles, so pay attention in tight bends, especially downhill.
The whole route runs through beautiful pine forests that dominate Bardonecchia.
You can reach by car, "Smith Field". From where strat the ski resorts of Bardonecchia.
At the end of the parking, you have the Dora river on your left, there start a steep and uncomfortable trail, which ,in the midst of low tree branches and on uneven rocky, reach the Bramafam plateau.
I usually use this route to return home.
When to Bike
The Ancient Fortress. At the end of the nineteenth century, following the construction of the Frejus Tunnel Railway, to protect the town of Bardonecchia (door of Italy )from possible French attacks, was built a powerful and modern fortress atop Mount Bramafam.
Work began in 1886 and ended in 1893.
The fort was armed with two 120 mm guns in armored cupola, four rapid-fire guns of 75 mm armored dome and numerous open-air batteries for campaign guns.
The fortress in time of war, could accommodate more than five hundred men.
Nowadays, after a longperiod of neglect and decay (following the peace treaty of Paris, 1947), was recovered, transformed into a huge museum and headquarters in the summer of cultural events, plays and historical pageants.
At Bramafam you can never get bored!
