The Niemcza hills are a part of the Sudetes forehills, along with Slęża and the Strzelin Hills. Barely exceeding the height of 400m, they are of the same nature and character than the later, and according to some geographical definitions regarded as a part of them.
However, Niemcza hills are rather a group of sparse small massifs, while the Strzelin Hills unit is more compact. The Niemcza hills, as their name suggests, are located around the town of Niemcza, and can be split into several small hilly and woody areas, such as :
- Wzgórza Dębowe (east half)
- Wzgórza Gumińskie (south)
- Wzgórza Krzyżowe (west half)
- Wzgórza Gilowskie (not visited...)

This round-shaped loop, as I imagined it, starts in the village of Łagiewniki, fast and easy to reach by car from Wrocław (30mn, as much as Sobótka or Strzelin). The goal was to ride the marked trails running the crest of each of them. The whole distance is 50km, but one third of it is made of asphalted roads linking each place.

The experience was very positive and is to be repeated, but with few pieces of trail to avoid. For example, two of the highest points, Ostra Góra on the east half, and Zamkowa Góra (407m, highest top), are rather for the only pedestrian. I also noticed the red trail on Wzgórza Dębowe is better maintained, less prone to ruts filled with water or fallen trees resulting from forestry activity.

However, Ostra Góra is worth visiting for admiring, or rather deploring, the outlook tower in very poor state (pre-war and never maintained), where climbing further than the first floor is strongly inadvisable.
Half way on the southernmost end, the Spa of Przerzeczyn-Zdrój is a place worth making a break.

When to Bike

When weather is uncertain, ride only Wzgórza Dębowe. Ride the rest when the weather is really dry and long enough after heavy rains.
In summer, trails on Wzgórza Krzyżowe can be also invaded by wild vegetation.
A good ride for early spring or late autumn only.
